Ali Mirza | Energy & Utilities Specialist

Mr. Mirza is a seasoned global project finance professional with a 16-year track record of originating and executing capital raising and advisory mandates, primarily for Independent Power Produces (IPPs), utilities and cleantech/renewable energy companies. He possesses a rigorous underwriting and portfolio management background, including extensive hands on distressed debt workout experience in more than 15 countries.

Mr. Mirza was until recently a senior risk management executive at GE Capital, managing a $1 billion portfolio of mostly energy assets and responsible for underwriting debtor-in-possession (DIP) and other challenging financings. Among other transactions, he underwrote and managed (as the Revolving Agent) the $7.6B Calpine DIP/POR financing. During his 3½ years at GE, he underwrote more than $1 billion in credit exposure. For 3 years prior to that, Mr. Mirza was a Principal at GFP Advisors, a boutique investment bank, where his advisory clients included Calpine, the Williams Companies, Vulcan Energy, and satellite start-up ProtoStar. He was part of the team that coordinated San Francisco Airport’s bid to win Virgin America’s corporate headquarters

Between 1993 and 2001, Mr. Mirza distinguished himself at Bank of America in the Global Project Finance group. Several of his transactions were recognized as “Deal of the Year” by Project Finance International. Originally based in San Francisco, he relocated to Hong Kong for 2 years and later spent a year in New York heading BofA's Latin America energy project finance practise.

Mr. Mirza graduated from University of California at Berkeley with dual bachelor’s in physics and economics. He has spoken at numerous energy conferences and holds FINRA’s Series 7 & 63 licenses.
